Home Maidenhead Exchange Visits Kortrijk Visit to Maidenhead 2016

6th - 10th June 2016

At the beginning of June, an enjoyable and successful week was spent with our twelve guests from Kortrijk and we were so lucky with the weather! Here is a summary by our Vice-president:

Our guests arrived by train and we met them at Maidenhead Station. Greetings were exchanged and our guests headed off to the homes of their respective hostesses. In the evening we enjoyed a buffet ‘Welcome Supper’ at Stubbings Parish Hall. The party was joined by ex-presidents of MWGEF, as well as this year’s ‘Supper Party’ hostesses.

On Tuesday morning, Kortrijk gave a superb presentation in the Sanctuary at the URC entitled ‘The World of Lucky Luke’. It was about the cartoonist Maurice de Bevere alias ‘Morris’ who was born in Kortrijk in 1923 and Lucky Luke was one of his famous cartoon characters. The Presentation was followed by a buffet lunch in the main hall. However, we were challenged to serve lunch without a kitchen, as a couple of weeks earlier the kitchen at the URC was demolished when a car ran into the building! But of course we did it with aplomb! In the afternoon our guests and their hostesses visited Maidenhead Town Hall and were privileged to meet the new Mayor, Sayonara Luxton, and enjoyed a glass of wine with her. The Mayor’s Officer gave a brief history about the mace and some of the other paraphernalia and the Mayor donned her robes. In the evening some of our members generously hosted small ‘Supper Parties’ in their homes for our Belgian guests and their hostesses.

Wednesday was our grand day out to Waddesdon Manor. We travelled by coach from Braywick and enjoyed coffee on arrival followed by a guided tour of the house. The guides were superb and the house magnificent. After a very pleasant lunch we had a brief guided tour of the gardens before returning home. There were no planned activities in the evening so many chose to gather informally in small groups for supper.

On Thursday morning we met with our guests at Jenner’s Café near Boulters Lock before embarking on a very enjoyable boat trip on the Thames to Windsor and lunch at ‘The Brasserie’ in Eton.  The remainder of the afternoon was free and spent in various ways by our guests including a whistle stop tour of Windsor Castle! In the evening we enjoyed a superb ‘Farewell Dinner’ at Frederick’s and we were joined by husbands, partners & friends. It was a pleasant summer evening, allowing us to enjoy a pre-dinner drink in the gardens.

All too soon it was time to say goodbye to our guests on Friday morning. We waved them off at Maidenhead Station as they embarked on their return journey home. Au revoir - until we meet again!
