WOMEN’S CIRCLE FOR EUROPEAN FRIENDSHIP

FRASCATI CONGRESS – 20TH – 24TH SEPTEMBER, 2010

MAIDENHEAD WOMEN’S GROUP FOR EUROPEAN FRIENDSHIP

PRESIDENT’S REPORT FOR CONGRESS 2010

To begin, we in the Maidenhead group wish to express our grateful thanks to Vincenza, Agnese and the ladies of the Frascati group for organising the Congress for us all.

In 2010 the Maidenhead group has existed for forty five years.  We owe a debt of gratitude to the women of that former time who had the vision to form our friendship group and join with our European friends in this unique organisation of ours. Since the Congress in 2004 our membership numbers have increased to eighty two.  The membership is open to all ladies who have an interest in friendship and the European ideal.

Our Committee has eleven members.  They are Officers:- President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Programme Secretary and six members one of whom acts as President’s Assistant for one year.  These members all have responsibilities within the Committee and they each serve for three years. Two of the six Committee members leave the Committee each year to enable us to have two new members to bring fresh ideas and for more of our ladies to be involved in the administration of our group.

We meet on the second Wednesday of every month when we have a speaker give a lecture on a topic of interest to improve knowledge and appreciation of some aspect of Europe.  One of our members gives a European report, this is on a European subject of interest to her, which she shares with the members. Our average attendance at meetings is about fifty five.  We produce regular newsletters concerning any group activities these enable any member unable to attend a meeting to keep up to date with the group business.

Since the last Congress we have formed several extra small groups for members they are:- French, German, Italian and Spanish language and conversation.  English and French literature, Reading for Pleasure, Art and Music.  These groups are well attended and very popular with our membership.

During the summer break we have two coffee mornings in the homes or gardens of our member’s homes.  At Christmas we have a party when the Committee provide the food and our Past President Win Law plays the piano and leads us singing carols.

We have visited various exhibitions and museums, Art Lectures, theatre and concerts during the past six years.  We also have visited Antwerp and the European Parliament in Brussels and the Hague, when we were joined by our husbands and friends.  These visits give us an opportunity to get to know our own members better in a relaxed atmosphere.

The highlight of our year is always the visits we have with our sister groups.  We have thoroughly enjoyed being with our dear friends whether in their Countries or in England.  We consider these visits an ideal way to foster further friendship and they are essential for the understanding of fellow women in Europe.

After 45 years we are so pleased to be able to say that the European Friendship between all our groups is healthy and thriving and long may it continue.

Rita Ashmore, President
