CANDLELIT CHRISTMAS CONCERT AND CAROLS

St Martin's in the Field, London
Saturday 8th Dec. 2012, at 7.30 pm

This year, fifty five members, their partners and friends attended a Candlelit Evening Performance of traditional Christmas music and carols at "St Martin's in the Field", a well known church in Trafalgar Square.

The Programme, performed by the London Musical Arts Orchestra, conducted by John Landor, included:

  • Handel - Overture from 'Music for the Royal Fireworks'
  • Bach - Suite No 3 in D
  • Handel - Allegro from 'Water Music'
  • Corelli - 'Concerto Grosso' op 6 No 8 - 'Christmas Concerto'
  • Handel - Overture and Pastoral Symphony from 'Messiah'
  • Vivaldi - 'Winter' from 'Four Seasons'
  • Christmas Carols with audience participation, including The First Nowell, Silent Night, Come all Ye Faithfull.

In the classical ambience of this iconic church, the music was uplifting! The orchestra, comprising many young musicians playing a variety of chamber instruments, was enthusiastic, and the conductor, charming.

We enjoyed taking part in the Carols and in the Finale, when the orchestra dispersed amongst the pews and played their instruments amongst the audience.

It was a very memorable evening!

Following the concert, our members and their guests responded to the request for charitable donations and gave away £177 to the St Martin in the Fields Christmas Appeal 2013, raising money for their charity, Connections, which provides accommodation and food for the homeless in London over winter. A very worthwhile cause!
